Visa and Registration

Visa
Students from EU or EFTA countries, as well as from Australia, Canada, Honduras, Israel, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand and the United States of America do not need a student visa.

Students of other nationalities must have a student visa. The visa must be obtained from the German embassy in the student's home country. If you wish to come to Germany to do a language course before the master course begins you can obtain an applicant's visa. To obtain a student visa you must have the official letter of acceptance from the university and provide proof that you have funding for your stay in Germany. Registration
To register with the university, students must be admitted to the program. You will receive detailed information about registration along with your letter of acceptance, which is sent to your home address. You will be informed when you can register and which documents you need. In any case you must register before the semester begins.

The following documents are required for registration:

  • Acceptance letter
  • Passport and student visa
  • Residency permit issued by the city of Freiburg immigration office
  • Proof of health insurance
  • Receipt for payment of the registration and the so called social fee (€ 93)
  •  Filled in registration form
  • 2 passport photos

Before you register with the university you must register yourself at the citizens’ office (Bürgeramt) and apply for a residency permit. EU students do not need a residency permit. Please note, that you cannot register yourself at the citizens’ office until you have found accommodation. Additional information for international students can be found here.
