DAAD - scholarships for young professionals from developing countries
The “Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst” (DAAD) has selected the MEG program as postgraduate course with special relevance to developing countries and is offering a limited number of scholarships. Target group: Young professionals from developing countries with an academic degree far above average and with at least two years of relevant professional experience in public administration, industry or commerce.
Application requirements: Age limit: not older than 36 at the time of application; Academic degree far above average; At least two years of professional experience; Confirmation of employment from the candidate´s employer in the home country and, where possible, a guarantee of re-employment upon his/her return to the home country ; Letter of recommendation of recent date; A statement of motivation with reference to current occupation; Minimum TOEFL of 600 (paper based). Applicants who have lived in Germany for 2 or more years directly prior to the commencement of the MEG-program are not eligible.
Application deadlines for winter semester 2012
Please send a SINGLE copy of your application to ONE of the following:
- German Embassy or DAAD office in your country (deadline 31 July 2011)
or
- DAAD Bonn (Ref. 431), Germany (deadline 31 August 2011)
or
- University of Freiburg, Faculty of Forest and Environmental Sciences, MEG Program, (deadline 15 October 2011)
Application documents required:
If you hand in all the documents mentioned above, there is no need to fill in any additional reference forms of the DAAD. Just one set of documents is required, as the same documents will be evaluated for both the MEG Program and the DAAD scholarship's selection processes.
Other DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) scholarships
If you do not belong to the above mentioned group of candidates, you may still apply for regular DAAD scholarships. To receive a scholarship, previous academic achievements, the references by your university professors and the description of your intended studies are important. The application for a scholarship must be submitted to a DAAD office or the German embassy in the applicant’s home country. Generally, the application deadline is in autumn.

Organisations For Promoting Young Talent (Begabtenförderungswerke)
There are 11 organisations for promoting young talent (Begabtenförderungswerke) in Germany, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Their aim is the individual promotion of responsible elites by giving financial and other support to students and doctoral students.

Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung
foundation associated with the Social Democratic Party; funds undergraduate and postgraduate students from home and abroad; requirements are above average academic performance and voluntary sociopolitical or social activities. -> Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung
Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung
funds undergraduate and postgraduate students from home and abroad; requirements are a high academic qualification, personal qualities and voluntary political or social activities based on a liberal ideology. Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung

Scholarship for candidates from Eastern European countries
The Alfred Toepfer Scholarship, funded by the Alfred Toepfer Foundation, is aimed candidates from eastern European countries under 30 years, who finish their studies at a German university. The scholarship programme funds only the final phase (2nd year) of a master program. For more information, visit
KAAD (Katholischer Akademischer Austauschdienst)
funds undergraduate and postgraduate students from abroad. Funding is based on the need for specialists in the applicant’s home country; catholic laymen with religious beliefs who are actively involved in church are supported. In exceptional cases non Catholics may be supported.; requirements: above average academic qualifications, personal integrity, willingness to share knowledge to serve society and the church in the applicants home country, good knowledge of the German langauge or the ability to improve the language skills within an acceptable period of time. Support offered by the International Office of Freiburg University
